Electric Vehicle Charging Phase 1

Location: University College London, Main Campus

University College London (UCL) has taken a significant step towards sustainability by implementing Electric Vehicle (EV) charging facilities across key locations on the Bloomsbury Campus. As part of UCL’s green initiative, Phase 1 of the EV charging installation was carried out by Alpine Works in 2022, facilitating the transition to cleaner transportation options within the university premises.

Scope of Work: The project involved the supply and installation of Schneider Electric EV charging units, metering systems, signage, minor building works, and the implementation of designated parking bay markings for electric vehicles. Phase 1 focused on three strategic locations within the campus:

  • Foster Court Quad – 2 charging units
  • IoE 20 Bedford Way Service Yard – 2 charging units
  • Wilkins Building Terrace Service Yard – 1 charging unit

Energy Management & Monitoring: To optimise power usage, the EV chargers were integrated with UCL’s EMON system for real-time monitoring. The system features dynamic energy management, which ensures that available power from the building is efficiently allocated to EV charging without exceeding capacity limits. Wireless metering devices were installed for accurate energy tracking and reporting.

Outcome & Impact: The completion of Phase 1 has provided UCL staff and visitors with accessible, efficient, and reliable EV charging facilities, reinforcing the university’s commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction. The project lays the groundwork for further expansion, with future phases set to introduce additional charging points across the campus.
