Student Space & Office Refurbishment

Location: University College London

Background

As part of UCL’s continued investment in high-quality academic spaces, the university commissioned a refurbishment of the third-floor suite at 1–19 Torrington Place. The goal was to transform a series of outdated offices into a modern environment supporting PhD research, shared workspace, and flexible collaboration. The project required a comprehensive refurbishment within a live campus environment, where maintaining minimal disruption and ensuring high-quality finishes were essential to success.

Scope

Alpine Works Limited delivered a full internal fit-out including demolition, construction, finishes, MEP services, and furniture coordination. Initial works involved stripping out existing glazed and panelled partitions, floor boxes, suspended ceilings, and redundant MEP systems. The space was then reconfigured with a combination of stud and glazed partitions to form new PhD study pods, meeting rooms, shared offices, and social spaces.

We installed new suspended ceilings, dado trunking, bespoke joinery, and acoustic partitions with integrated services. The MEP scope included installation of new lighting, emergency lighting, small power, data, fire alarms, mechanical ventilation alterations, and heating modifications to suit the new layout. Flooring works featured carpet tile finishes coordinated to zones, while decorations and final signage were completed in line with UCL’s brand and DDA compliance.

Throughout the programme, we coordinated closely with stakeholders and the design team, managing logistics in a constrained site with limited access, and delivering to tight timescales with zero impact on adjacent university operations.

Outcome

The project was completed on time and to a high standard, successfully transforming the third floor into a vibrant, functional space tailored for postgraduate researchers and staff. The new layout offers improved flexibility, increased natural light, enhanced acoustic performance, and modern infrastructure.

The completed refurbishment supports UCL’s academic mission while enhancing user experience, accessibility, and building efficiency. Alpine Works Limited’s delivery ensured minimal disruption and strong collaboration with UCL, continuing our reputation for reliable, high-quality work in the higher education sector.
